Article: Muay Thai VS boxing gloves

Difference between muay thai and boxing gloves

Like many boxers out there, I have always wondered what the main differences between a muay thai and boxing gloves are. After reading comments from many forums and asking around, I have found out the answer.

The main difference is the thumb's position and where the padding is distributed.

Thumb

The thumbs on the Thai gloves are straighter and longer which is supposed to allow you to clinch/grab easier. There's also more padding on the back of the hand area of the Thai gloves (for back fists, which is completely unnecessary on boxing gloves) and on the cuff (for blocking kicks). Also the main finger compartment on the Thai gloves is usually longer, again to help you clinch.

Amount of Padding

As you can see from the photos, there is a obvious difference in the amount of padding for a boxing glove and a muay thai glove. Generally, Muay thai gloves has thicker padding for blocking kicks and etc.

Everlast vs Top King Gloves (Price to quality)

Basic EVERLAST PU boxing gloves

Price : from S$49.90

Material : Synthetic leather with velcro strap

Extra features : Everfresh ( designed to fight the growth of bacteria and microbes )

Personal review : This was my first boxing gloves and i have used them for near to 6 months before theinner stitches at the thumb and the fingers start to tear apart. Although it still can be used, the sweat from your fingers is now absorbed into the padding, making the gloves smelly (even after cleaning). The leather outside proves to be rather durable and long lasting as stated by Everlast (if you take good care of them) .

TOPKING boxing gloves "AIR"

Price : from S$75 to S$85

Material : Genuine leather with a full wraparound Velcro closure

Extra features : Internal Clima Cool Technology that assists in gloves breathability.

Personal review : After using this gloves, I have never went back to using my old Everlast gloves. The multi-layered molded shock absorbent foam protects the users from intensive workout. The thickness, protection and the comfort level of the boxing gloves clearly exceeds my Everlast boxing gloves.
